Chapter Seven

“Who is he? Never running towards me but always running away. I want him...I want him to run my way. Those big brutes are always pestering him, intimidating him. Oh, I do wish he would fight back! I know he can’t beat them all but they might leave him alone if he tried...Stacey Matterson said something happened to him three years ago, something bad. I guess she would know; she lives next door to him. But she lies a lot too. If it’s true, it explains a lot. Maybe the fight has been beaten or scared out of him.”

-Concerned Connie-

Connie Long stared at the back of Brian’s head like it was a television set. She was in her home room class sitting on the first row by the classroom door. Brian Walker sat four seats ahead of her and he had his head down on the desk. He wasn’t rambunctious or unruly like the rest of the class was being. Actually, Connie had never seen him crack a smile. He barely said anything unless Mr. Weatherby asked him a question or was calling roll. Connie never saw a sadder person in her life and she was only fourteen.

Yesterday on the school grounds at break time, she overheard Stacey and her gossipy crew talking about Brian and what had happened to him about three years ago. Apparently, his mom’s boyfriend did some pretty unusual and disgusting things to him. She heard the boyfriend was caught by the mom and now he was still locked up in the State Penn. Everyone knew that Brian’s mother still felt extremely guilty about what happened because she was just down the hall sleeping that scary night. Some of the town folk were saying that his mom went a little crazy after that and didn’t let Brian go out the house for a whole three months.

Connie never knew Brian before the incident because he was always a loner. He spent most of his free school time in the school library. But she wanted to know him...there was something intriguing about him in that lone wolf kind of way. He was not the cutest guy in school but he was definitely the most mysterious.

She always spotted him running from the big bullies who tormented him almost every day. She wished they would just leave him alone! They were always pestering him, Big Dumb Bobby Cunningham and his gang of lackeys. Connie wanted Brian to stop running and fight them back. She knew he couldn’t beat them all but maybe they would leave him alone if he tried...she wished she was strong enough to take them on for him.

She was thinking all her brave thoughts while writing a note to Brian. She tried to get Stacey to pass her note to him but she was acting like the snob of the year. Connie wanted to kick her but didn’t want her shoes to get dirty by touching old stuck-up Stacey Matterson. Chris McIntosh helped her out though by passing the note along with a promise that she would give him her tater tots at lunch.
